Build Identifier: version 3.0a2 (2008072418)
Shredder is configured for Gmail accounts via IMAP. I deleted a folder ("Junk E-Mail") that Outlook had created. This succeeded, but the Trash folder now contains a "Junk E-Mail" folder that cannot be accessed. Clicking it results in the following message:
The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Unknown Mailbox: [Gmail]/Trash/Junk E-mail (Failure).
The deleted folder does not appear in the Trash folder via the Gmail web interface.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Delete a folder.
2. Attempt to access it from the Trash folder.
Actual Results:
The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Unknown Mailbox: [Gmail]/Trash/Junk E-mail (Failure).
Expected Results:
Should be able to access the folder while it remains in the trash before Gmail purges it.

I experience this issue on MacOSX . Thunderbird version 3.0a1 (2008050714)
I usually just go into gmail to empty my trash manually to "fix" the hanging folders.

To Arthur Penn(bug oepener) and rob friedman:
How did you create the IMAP account?
- via account wizard for Gmail IMAP
- via usual account wizard and chose IMAP
You chose delete model of "move to trash model" and use "[Gmail]/Trash" as trash?
After the folder was moved to "[Gmail]/Trash/Junk E-mail" by your delete operation, was Gmail Label of "[Gmail]/Trash/Junk E-mail" or "Trash/Junk E-mail" generated on Gmail? (check via Gmail Web Interface).
Get IMAP log and check IMAP flow for "folder delete".
> Getting log : See Bug 402793 Comment #1
> IMAP command/response : http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3501.html
I guess Gmail IMAP returns OK for create but Gmail does do nothing on Gmail folder of Trash([Gmail]/Trash in Gmail IMAP).
I believe this kind of phenomenon is one of reasons why delete model of "Remove it immediately" is defaulted by "account wizard for Gmail IMAP".

Thanks for your reply. Note that I can no longer reproduce this problem in Thunderbird 3.0b2.

Didn't see the folder in the Gmail web interface.

You may be right.

WADA,
I used the manual method.
Tools->Account Settings->Add Account->E-mail Account->IMAP.
Honestly, I didn't even see/pay attention to the Gmail option there until you pointed it out. Must have glossed over right over it.
After looking at the Gmail wizard it would not have worked for us as we are using Google Apps and need to specify the domain as well as use IMAP instead of POP3 which it chooses for you.
I chose "move to trash" and selected "[gmail]/Trash". The label was never generated in webmail. But there is a "/Trash" IMAP folder with the folder I created and deleted. Not in "[Gmail]/Trash".
Manually setting my personal and work accounts to "Remove it immediately" seems to have partially solved the issue for me. It would be nice if the trash can worked, and folders did not get stuck.
Attached is a log generated using the methods outlined here. https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging#Mac

I should probably note that I have basically the same issue with the "Trash" moving as with the "Sent" Folder showing up in / and under "[Gmail]" but the contents are not the same.
I have set Thunderbird to use the correct "[Gmail]" folders in the account settings.

Log of what operations? Log for next? (recreation of your original problem)
Create a folder(say F1), Delete the folder(moved to [Gmail]/Trash/F1),
Clink [Gmail]/Trash/F1 => unknown Mailbox

"Account Wizard for Gmail *IMAP*" is not available in Tb2, is landed on Tb3(Beta, Trunk) only. Check with Tb trunk, please. Although server name, username, domain name in mail address etc. are different from yours, preset folder name(Trash, Drafts, Sent, Junk folders) is probably good for you.
See Bug 467860 Comment #25 for particularity of Gmail IMAP in folder name(structure). See Bug 458770 for request of assistance in Google App account creation. See meta Bug 402793 and bugs listed in dependency tree for Bug 402793(with "Sow Reasolved"), for Gmail IMAP related issues due to particularity of Gmail IMAP.

Thank you WADA for your attention. My appologies, I thought you were asking for an IMAP log in comment #5. The log was of me attempting getting sidetracked slightly and then finally causing the error of Unknown Mailbox in a trash folder, then quiting.
I just tried another logged session to create the error; I created F1 folder under INBOX, removed it and it went to "/Trash" not "[Gmail]/Trash". Emptying the trash properly removed the folder from "/Trash"
I will look for the Tb3 beta builds, and read the other helpful looking bugs you mention.

> removed it and it went to "/Trash" not "[Gmail]/Trash".
Read Bug 482337 Comment #1, please. If you want to change trash folder name with Tb2, you have to set mail.server.serverN.trash_folder_name=[Gmail]/Trash manually.
Note: If "Trash" is set in this entry, Tb request creation of "Trash" folder, and Gmail creates Gmail Label named "[Imap]/Trash". It's same for standard "Drafts" and "Sent" folder.

If Gmail IMAP returns OK to "create [Gmail]/Trash/Deleted_Folder" but doesn't create IMAP folder named [Gmail]/Trash/Deleted_Folder, situation for IMAP client(Thunderbird) is as follows;
1. Thunderbird : Access a mail folder
2. Other client : Delete the mail folder
3. Thunderbird : Try to access the mail folder => mailbox doesn't exist
It probably causes Bug 481142.
Why Bug 481142 doesn't occur with Tb3 Beta 2 in your case? "\HasNoChildren or \Noinferiors for [Gmail]/Trash" is the reason? It won't produce problem of Bug 481142? Or "subscribe fails" then non-existent [Gmail]/Trash/Deleted_Folder can't be accessed or disappears when Tb3 Beta 2?
Note: When subfolder of "trash" case, "empty trash" can be a recovery procedure from problem of Bug 481142, as rob friedman says in Comment #11.
